Let's talk about it
find out about the people who wear the jewelry and what makes them tick.

The first piece of Whimsy’s Jewels jewellery I ever bought was a Christmas present for my mom. Shopping for her during the holidays is always tricky as December 25th is also her birthday. That’s right, my mom is one of the lucky (or unlucky) few that share her birthday with the biggest holiday of the year.
During the holidays my mom transforms into something a little more magical. People are always surprised to hear that even though my mom’s birthday is on Christmas, it’s her favourite time of year. Starting in mid-November boxes upon boxes of decorations, bells, and garland are pulled from the basement and into our living room. By December 1st our house looks like it came straight out of a Hallmark Holiday movie. Christmas decorating is one of her favourite things to do.
It’s never a surprise anymore, but I’m often doing homework in my office and then I hear, “Melissa, can you help me with something?” I come up the stairs to find my mom standing on a chair or a ladder holding a wreath or some stars with lights. Without even looking she asks, “What do you think? Should I put this here this year, or would it look better over the stairs?” Every year we come to the consensus that nothing ever looks good over the stairs.
Decorating the tree is the big event before Christmas. My mom lays all the ornaments on the dining room table two days in advance. Our whole family has busy schedules so it’s a Christmas miracle in itself that we find a few hours to come together and decorate the tree. My mom will put on her favourite Amy Grant Christmas album and then it’s a free for all for tree real estate.
We have a lot of Christmas ornaments. Every Christmas my mom will buy a new ornament for my brother and I to put on the tree; because of this we have quite the collections. Everything from Scooby-Doo in a fire truck to Sleeping Beauty’s castle makes it’s way onto our tree, and just about every third ornament sings or glows. In fact just about one in every third decoration in our house sings or glows. We love Christmas in our house, and it all started with my mom.
When I bought those earrings a year ago, I never realized the meaning they would hold. They weren’t the biggest gift under the tree, but something about them felt just right. I realize now it’s because when my mom wears them they reflect her joy like nothing else could. So now when I think of who a Whimsy woman is, I think of my mom and all her Christmas magic.
As I’ve grown up, I’ve come to realize just how thankful I am for her love. Because of her I believe in the magic of not only Christmas, but also the whimsical magic of everyday. She’s taught me to believe in myself, and to embrace every little creative, odd, and quirky thing about me. I am never afraid to be myself because once upon a time my mom saw a little bit of whimsical magic in me and made sure I never lost it.
We may argue, and we may not see eye to eye on many things (like if the wreath should go above the stairs) but she’s my mom. I’m so incredibly lucky to have her in my life, and every Christmas I’m reminded of that a little more.
